Author Biography
Jody M. Roy, PhD, is a professor of communication at Ripon College and is well known (i.e. "notorious") for her exacting standards for students' writing. "I am the writer I am today," she says, "only because teachers, professors and, in time, editors, gave of their time and talents to help me improve. I try to give my students that same level of attention. I believe it to be a matter of respect." Roy publishes in a wide variety of genres, from traditional scholarly texts to mass-market creative non-fiction. Roy does not confine her collaborative research and writing projects only to work with other academics: in fact, she is currently collaborating with a group of more than two dozen inmates. Yet while Roy's publishing outlets and collaborators are diverse, all her work is unified by her driving purpose: to give voice to—and tap the expertise of--the people we too often don't hear and, in doing so, to help prevent violence among today's youth.
Inmates, Ex-Convicts, and Undergraduates: Writing at the Intersection of Research, Teaching and Activism.
Named Wisconsin's top professor by the Carnegie Foundation/CASE in 2005, Jody M. Roy has never limited her writing to the purely scholarly or her teaching to the classroom. Roy will reflect on the lessons she has learned by partnering with ex-convicts and inmates to shed light on the challenges facing our youth. She will also discuss how teachers and students---in particular those at the undergraduate level—can enrich the educational process by empowering student outreach into troubled sectors of the community.
