Author Biography
Timothy Dale is an assistant professor of political science in the Department of Social Change and Development at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. He is interested in the connections between popular culture and politics in a democracy. Dale is particularly intrigued by the way in which our political conversations are shaped by our common popular culture experiences. He is the co-editor, with Joseph Foy, of Homer Simpson Marches on Washington: Dissent through American Popular Culture (2010), a collection of essays examining the influence common culture has on political agendas. Dale is also the co-author of Political Thinking, Political Theory, and Civil Society (2009).
Additional Information
Homer Simpson Marches on Washington: Dissent through American Popular Culture
Are there political messages contained in The Daily Show, The Simpsons, and House? What impact do these messages have on the way we consider political problems? Through a scholarly and entertaining approach, our discussion will reveal that popular culture provides a common framework through which we experience politics in our society. We will also show that popular culture has particular significance in shaping political debate and communicating political messages intended to bring about social change. The discussion here will explore several examples in popular culture that express these dissenting voices.
