Bruce Dethlefsen

Author Biography

Bruce Dethlefsen has been appointed Wisconsin Poet Laureate for the two-year term of 2011 and 2012. His mission is to promote poets and poetry in Wisconsin, and one of his goals is to help communities across the state establish local poetry reading series at libraries, schools, or coffee houses. Dethlefsen is the author of the chapbooks A Decent Reed (1998) and Something Near the Dance Floor (2003), which won the 2003 Posner Award Honorable Mention from the Council for Wisconsin Writers. Breather (2009), his most recent collection, won an Outstanding Achievement in Poetry award from the Wisconsin Library Association.

Dethlefsen received his bachelor's degree from UW-La Crosse and earned a master's degree from UW-Oshkosh. He served as secretary of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets for six years and hosted the Poet Tree reading series at the Montello Public Library for ten years. He lives in Westfield, Wisconsin.
