Fox Cities Reads
The 2013 Fox Cities Reads is underway! Pick up a copy of Last Child in the Woods and the Nature Priniciple by Richard Louv at your local library and join in community-wide discussions about the book. The author will visit the Fox Cities April 22-24 during the Fox Cities Book Festival.
Author Biography
Wendy Vardaman, has a Ph.D. in English from University of Pennsylvania and a B.S. in Engineering from Cornell University. Co-editor and webmaster of Verse Wisconsin & its new-hatched fledgling, Cowfeather Press, her poems, reviews, and interviews have appeared online and in a variety of anthologies and journals, including Poetry Daily, Poets.org, Your Daily Poem, Breathe: 101 Contemporary Odes, Riffing on Strings: Creative Writing Inspired by String Theory, Letters to the World, Poet Lore, qarrtsiluni, Mezzo Cammin, Nerve Cowboy, Free Verse, Wisconsin People & Ideas, Women’s Review of Books, Rain Taxi Review, Rattle and Portland Review. She is co-editor of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets' 2013 Wisconsin Poets' Calendar. The author of Obstructed View (Fireweed Press, 2009), she has been nominated for a number of Pushcart Prizes, as well as a Best of the Net Award, and was runner-up in 2004 for the Council for Wisconsin Writers’ Lorine Niedecker Award.
She lives in Madison, WI with husband, Thomas DuBois, has three children, and works part-time (& volunteers) for the children’s theater company, The Young Shakespeare Players.
In 2012, she was appointed, with Sarah Busse, co-Poet Laureate of Madison, a volunteer post overseen by the Madison Arts Commission.

Representatives of five Wisconsin presses will speak about their missions, philosophies and processes of publishing from selection to final draft. You’ll learn how authors are chosen (or turned down). You’ll discover the press’ obligation to author and the author’s obligation to the press from money to marketing to mailing out books.
This session will be facilitated by Karla Huston. Participants include:

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: abandon nights, weekends, and a low odometer reading; prepare a face to meet a room filled with 200 or 20 or 2 faces; make less than minimum wage (if you’re lucky); promote poetry (not always yours) at every turn. This is the work week of a city or state Poet Laureate. Despite a description that sounds like a feature on “Dirty Jobs,” Wisconsin has been blessed with some of its finest poets volunteering for the cause. In this presentation, join current Poets Laureate representing Madison, Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin as they share their poetry and a bit more of their mission as the appointed ambassadors of poetry.
