In this session, drawing on examples from his own work and that of others, Scott Dominic Carpenter discusses the crucial importance of beginnings. Opening paragraphs serve to intrigue, orient, introduce, and explain—while they simultaneously propel the story forward and imply its development. Although the scale is different for stories and novels, the principles are the same.
